Many Pictures of the Same Family: How the Bible Describes God’s People

  Jesus Christ with biblical metaphors
By Rich Amick

Have you ever noticed that the Bible uses many different word pictures to describe God’s people? One moment we’re called sheep, the next we’re a family, then a body, a bride, or even a living building. Why so many pictures?

Because each one helps us understand a different part of what it means to belong to Jesus. And the wonderful news is this: they all point to the same simple truth — we are loved, chosen people in a real relationship with Christ.

Here’s how the Bible beautifully puts it:

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,   are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household.”
  (Ephesians 2:19, NASB 2020)

  Many Pictures, One Savior

The Bible describes us in these beautiful ways (with Scripture references so you can look them up yourself). These pictures are not blueprints for building organizations, denominations, or systems—they are relational word pictures meant to help us know Jesus and one another more deeply:

  • Citizens in His Kingdom — Christ is our King (Colossians 1:13; Revelation 1:6; Hebrews 12:28)
  • Brothers and sisters in God’s Family — part of the household of God (Romans 8:29; Ephesians 2:19; 1 John 3:1-2)
  • Members of Christ’s Body — connected to Jesus as the Head (Ephesians 1:22-23; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Colossians 1:18)
  • Sheep in His Flock — following Jesus, our Good Shepherd (John 10:11-16, 27; 1 Peter 5:2-4)
  • Branches connected to the True Vine — abiding in Christ for life and fruitfulness (John 15:1-8)
  • Living Stones in God’s Temple — built together on Christ the Cornerstone (1 Peter 2:4-8; Ephesians 2:19-22; Matthew 16:18)
  • The Bride of Christ — in loving covenant relationship with Jesus the Bridegroom (Ephesians 5:25-32; Revelation 19:7-9; Revelation 21:2,9)
  • Citizens of the Heavenly City — part of the New Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22-24; Revelation 21:2-3,9-27; Galatians 4:26)
  • A Royal Priesthood — chosen to serve God directly (1 Peter 2:9-10; Revelation 1:6)
  • God’s Fruitful Field — planted by Him and part of His harvest (1 Corinthians 3:9; Matthew 9:37-38)

In every picture, Jesus is at the center — our King, Shepherd, Head, Bridegroom, and Cornerstone. These aren’t organizational templates to replicate, but living pictures that invite us into a deeper relationship with Him and with each other.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession…”
  (1 Peter 2:9, NASB 2020)

What This Means for Everyday Life

No matter how long you’ve been attending church, these pictures remind us that following Jesus is first and foremost about a personal relationship with Him. He wants us to:

  • Listen for His voice like sheep follow their shepherd
  • Stay connected to Him like branches to a vine
  • Love and serve one another as members of the same body
  • Live holy lives as His bride

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe.”
  (Hebrews 12:28, NASB 2020)

  Closing Encouragement

Today, wherever you are in your faith journey, remember this: You are deeply loved and fully included in God’s family. Jesus is building something beautiful with your life. Stay close to Him, love the people around you, and live with hope — because His kingdom is real, unshakable, and full of grace.

You don’t have to figure everything out today. Just keep walking with Jesus. He’s the One who holds all these beautiful pictures together.
