How do God’s complete sovereignty and our real human freedom fit together? Does God unchangeably determine every individual decision, or are we left entirely on our own? These questions have challenged Christians for centuries, and they can leave people confused or discouraged.
Yet Scripture presents something richer and more beautiful: a sovereign God powerful enough to accomplish His eternal purposes in Christ while still making a genuine offer of salvation to all people. Human choices are real, meaningful, and morally significant, even within God’s sovereign plan.
IIn this article and the two to follow, we will explore what the Bible teaches about election, predestination, foreknowledge, and the obedience of faith.
Jesus extends an invitation to every weary heart:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
(Matthew 11:28, NASB 2020)
Predestination: God's Purpose in Christ
What comes to mind when you hear the word “predestination”? Some imagine God deciding beforehand which individuals will be saved and which will not. But when Paul speaks about predestination, his emphasis is first and foremost on Jesus Christ and God’s eternal purpose in Him.
“just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,”
(Ephesians 1:4-5, NASB 2020)
Notice the repeated emphasis: “in Him” and “through Jesus Christ.” God’s eternal purpose has always been centered on His Son. Christ is the chosen One, and God determined before the foundation of the world that all who are in Him by faith would share in His life, holiness, inheritance, and adoption.
Predestination, then, is not primarily about an abstract list of isolated individuals. It is about God’s settled plan to create a redeemed people in Christ.
The Goal of Predestination
Paul reinforces this same truth in Romans:
“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters;”
(Romans 8:29, NASB 2020)
Notice the goal: conformity to Christ. God’s purpose is not merely to save people from judgment, but to transform them into the likeness of His Son. His eternal plan is a redeemed family reflecting the character and glory of Jesus Christ.
This transformation is not the result of human effort alone. We respond to Christ freely through faith, and God graciously works within us to shape us into His image.
A Sincere Invitation
TThe message of predestination is meant to inspire confidence and worship, not fear or hopelessness. God’s saving purpose is rooted in Christ and openly proclaimed through the gospel.
You do not need to wonder whether you are excluded by some hidden decree. The invitation of Jesus is sincere: come to Him in faith. Everyone who trusts in Christ shares fully in the blessings God planned beforehand for His people.
What God predestined from eternity was that those who are “in Christ” would become like Christ — holy, adopted, and forever part of His family.
In the next article, we will continue exploring God’s foreknowledge and how His sovereign wisdom works together with genuine human response for His glory and our good.
