“In You” and “In Your Seed” — Why Blessing Exists Only in Union with Christ
God told Abraham, “And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed” (Genesis 12:3). The prepositional phrase “in you” is crucial. God’s blessings are never general or automatic; they are always located in someone chosen by Him. In Adam came life and death, in Noah preservation, in Abraham promise, in David kingship, and in Christ salvation. As Paul wrote, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The promised blessing is relational; existing through union with Christ.
Many people interpret Genesis 12:3 as political or ethnic, as though blessing comes to those who align with Abraham’s descendants. But Scripture says the opposite. Paul explains Genesis 12:3 with, “In order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles” (Galatians 3:14). The blessing flows not through Abraham’s lineage, but through Christ, the promised Seed. Faith is what unites us to Him, so it’s not proximity or association that brings blessing but union through belief.
The truth that blessing comes through faith in Jesus Christ protects both the gospel and the Jewish people from distortion. It teaches that Jews are not excluded and Gentiles are not elevated. Christ unites all who call upon Him. “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all” (Romans 10:12).
The promise to Abraham was always global and missional, never nationalistic. Peter declared its fulfillment when he said that God sent His Son Jesus, “to bless you” (Acts 3:25-26). The blessing God promised to Abraham reaches “all the families of the earth” or people of every nation through Christ.
If blessing exists only in Christ by faith, then Genesis 12:3 cannot be claimed apart from Christ. The promise always pointed to Jesus, the true Seed, through whom the world is blessed.
