God's Unshakeable Seal: He Knows His Own—And He Calls Us to Holiness

By Rich Amick
Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.” ~ 2 Timothy 2:19

God's Intimate Knowledge and Unfailing Grip on His Own

The assurance that "the Lord knows those who are His" brings profound comfort. It affirms God's intimate, unshakeable knowledge of every believer—not based on outward appearances or perfect performance, but on the faith He sees in our hearts toward His Son, Jesus the Christ, Son of the Living God. This firm foundation ("The Lord knows those who are His”) means He has a tight grip on us, protecting and preserving us like a sealed treasure. Keeping this promise in mind shifts the focus from ourselves and onto Him, from our weaknesses to His faithfulness. (See also 1 Peter 1:5; Romans 8:38-39; Jude 1:24; John 10:14, 28-29.)

Synthetic Parallelism: God's Knowledge Demands Our Purity

The truth that God knows those who are His should compel us to “abstain from wickedness.” The wording in 2 Timothy 2:19 is in the form of synthetic parallelism, a common pattern in Hebrew poetry where the second line adds to the first line. It moves the thought of the first line forward—building on or completing it. The first part, “The Lord knows those who are His,” is declarative. It focuses on God’s SOVEREIGN knowledge and ownership of His true people. The second part, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness,” builds on the first line by shifting to our responsibility that flows from the divine reality of God’s sovereignty. The second line completes the thought of the first line. If God truly knows "everyone who names the name of the Lord" and claims them as His own, then those who profess the name of the Lord must respond with moral separation from evil. (Cf. Titus 2:11-12; Ephesians 5:8-11; 1 John 3:1-3, 6-10.)

As believers, we take comfort in knowing that God knows we are His, and we let that divine reality be motivation to honor and glorify Him by godly living.
